Yi and the 10 suns

Telling Legends

Matua Alwyn shared some legends with us. He used the blocks to show a map of the legend as it is told.

We have been looking at legends with Eliza - comparing Maui and the sun to Yi and the 10 suns. Yi is a traditional Chinese legend that has a number of similarities to Maui and the sun.

Here is a link if you are interested in reading some Maori Legends.

Matai are now writing their own legends about the sun. Some are using imitation writing to create their stories and others have brainstormed original legends.

Maui & Mahu-ika
Hatupatu & his brothers

Puberty Plays

In puberty small groups were given different scenarios that they had to turn into 1 minute skits.
Each skit needed to show the problem, offer a solution and show who might be able to help you.

For example: 'You see a child in your class being bullied' or 'You feel anxious because your body is changing because of puberty'.

Letter to the Minister

7th November 2013

Hon Hekia Parata
Minister of Education
Parliament
Private Bag 18 888
Parliament Buildings
Wellington 6160

Dear Minister,

We’re year 4 and 5 students from Clyde Quay School. In winter more and more students are freezing. We would really appreciate it if you would double glaze our windows and insulate our classroom walls and ceilings because it keeps the warmth in and the cost down.

Children get sick because it’s damp and cold also they miss out on education and you are the person that should be stopping this kind of stuff. Do you really want us to spend your money because we can’t find a job if we weren't educated enough?

People are crowding the heater which makes the hot air go back into the heater. This will make the heater blow up will and make us so much colder than before. If we insulate the classrooms we will save electricity because we won’t be crowding the heater and be wasting money.

Double glazed windows and bats in the wall can be helpful to us. It can help to keep us warm and save electricity. Here at CQS we would really appreciate it if you would insulate our walls and double glaze our windows.

Yours sincerely.

Joel, Renee, Rove and Sophie

Envirovision 2013

On Friday we shared all of our learning and presentations with the school community. This included all of our inquiry work for terms 3 and 4, with a focus on electricity. The kids said it was great to be able to share their work with parents and students. They also enjoyed being able to go to other classes and see what the rest of the school has been doing in their inquiry work around Enviroschools.

Kahikatea and Matai have been working together to research and present their work. As you can see the tables in Matai were crammed with all of the fantastic presentations they have been working on.

M@tai Masterchef

Do you have a favourite recipe that your family loves to cook?.... and you love to eat!

We would like to make a Matai Cookbook for 2013 and make it available on the blog for families to share.

Your mission if you choose to accept it is:
Find a recipe that your family loves to cook.
Write out the ingredients list (including measurements eg. Cup, teaspoon etc).
Explain how you add the ingredients together and cook/bake it.
If you have a photo – include it (Or maybe there is a photo online that you can use?)
Write the recipe out in a document or use Google doc and share/email to Keith.
                   keith.hutton@clydequay.school.nz

I will make a PDF of our 2013 cookbook and share it on the blog pages. You have till Friday 29th November to email it to me.

HAPPY COOKING!

Card Shuffle

The year 5s have begun their puberty unit this term. We have been looking at ways that we can make sure that everyone feels safe to ask questions and support each other.

Today we have been doing a card shuffle - the kids needed to place pictures of people in order, from youngest to oldest. They then placed cards that identified each of the stages in a person's life from baby to elderly. Here are some of the groups working together to order their cards correctly. Lots of great communication to get the job done.

Working hard for Envirovision

Matai have been working hard in their groups to get ready for Envirovision on Friday 8th November. They have used information from our two local experts to research ways that Clyde Quay can reduce their electricity usage. We look forward to showing you our inquiry work for term 3 and 4.

Athletics Day

On 30th of October was an Athletics Day at Newtown Park. We had long jump, high jump, vortex and relays.

And there was ice cream for the people who had money.

There was a guy who had a cap gun so when we were doing sprints, we would know when to run. The highlight was teachers vs kids doing a lap around the track.

For high jump we had to do scissor kick over the pole to land on a gym mat.

For relays we were put into teams and each person had to run 100 metres.

Overall it was an awesome day with lots of fun and yummy ice cream.

Sprints and High Jump

Sprints at Athletics

At athletics we were doing sprints. At the sprints we split into two heats. The first heat ran then the second group ran after. When you cross the finish line the judges tell what place you got. If you got 1st 2nd 3rd or 4th then you get into the final. To qualify into central zone you must get 1st 2nd 3rd or 4th in the finals. At the start we ran 80 meters. Next we had to run 100 meters that was a bit harder. At the start of the race there was a cap gun that made a HUGE BANG. Everyone was nervous at the start of the race. At the end of the race everyone was very tired and puffed. Sprints is very tiring but very fun. We had an awesome day.

High Jump

On Wednesday it was athletics day for year 4 and up. There were five different sports; they were sprints, quoits, long jump, vortex and high jump. We are going to tell you a bit more about high jump. Basically high jump is when you run up to the gym mat and scissor kick up over the pole. Also if you jump over the pole the supervisor will raise the pole when everyone has had their second turn. To get into central zone you have to beat a certain height, it varies from gender to gender or year group. When you get into central zone you get to face other schools if have beaten the qualifying height.

Long Jump and Quoits

Long jump at athletics

On Wednesday 30th of October we had athletics day .Athletics took place at Newtown Park. One thing we did was long jump, a number of kids got in.
Everybody did so well. You had to jump three metres to get into the next round. Well done to the kids who got into the next round.
We had a great day.

Quoits at athletics

At athletics we do Sprints, vortex, high jump, long jump, relays and quoits of course. When the people switched round to quoits the year 5 boys had to throw the quoit 20 meters, if you throw it further than 20 meters the teacher will measure it and then put a peg in the ground where you threw it but if your score gets beaten they will take out that peg and put another peg where the score got beaten again by someone else. Only 3 people in the year 5s qualified/ 1 boy and 2 girls so they are in the Central Zone athletics.

Follow the link to find ways that you can save electricity at home...
EECA - Simple ways to save electricity on your energy bill.

Talk by Heidi from EECA

When Heidi came in she told us where she worked, which was an energy efficiency company (EECA). Then she told us that we should swap our light-bulbs to the modern ones because the old ones use a lot more energy than the modern ones. They are also a lot cheaper to run a year. The bulbs are now $5.00 but the old ones cost $25.00. But if you are going to buy one you should buy one that says energy star on it.

There are also energy vampires that just sit in heaters and waste electricity. Energy vampires are the lights on heaters that waste electricity. So turn things off at the wall. Matai and Kahikatea did a spot the difference of ways to save electricity in your house. On one side they were saving electricity. If you have a sticker on your washing machine or fridge the stars that are coloured in means it is more efficient.

Wisdom from the Snapper...

A visitor to the class

Today Matai and Kahikatea met someone awesome called Zach Rissel.
Zach works at the Wellington city council.  He grew up in California but now lives in Wellington.
Today he told us about how greenhouse gases included carbon dioxide.
Greenhouse gases are sometimes good and sometimes bad for our planet.

In your houses if you have mold you should turn on a fan or open a window because if cold wet air comes in and stays there it will create mold.
He helps people make their houses warmer.
He also told us about the highest usage of electricity in the home. People mostly use it for:
1. Hot water
2.Heating

If you want to save electricity turn down your hot water cylinder , use L.E.D Light bulb (sadly it costs more but it does use less electricity). This has helped us to collect information about how we can save more electricity at school.
