Student Councillors for 2015

Congratulations to the four students, who have been elected by democratic vote, to represent Matai in the student council.
In term 1 and 2 Sean and Rosalind will have the honor. Eve and Jackson will then represent us for term 3 and 4. We look forward to all the hard work they will be putting in to make 2015 a successful one.

#dumplings

To celebrate Chinese New Year, Totara and Matai made 300 dumplings today. There were six students helping us to get the fillings ready. They chopped lots of cabbage, spring onion, chinese mushrooms and carrots. Then Wanwan mixed them with pork and raw eggs so they were sticky.
We also made a vegetarian option.

After that we watched a video to learn about the importance of having dumplings during Chinese New Year.

We had some experts to help us and Wanwan also helped to show us the different steps to making the perfect dumpling. The classes were divided into 6 group and each of these made about 50 dumplings (in record fast time).

The best bit was when we had finished cooking the dumplings - we got to EAT them... and they were delicious (even the staff thought so).

Time for a maths challenge

Can you complete the magical maths tables below?

For each table it will need to:

1. Have all numbers from 1 to 16 in the table. You can only use each number once.

2. Have each row or column  add up to the magical number of 34.

Want to make a magical maths table for someone else to solve? Why not make your own one.
(Hint: You will need to make sure that one of rows or columns already has 3 boxes completed)

How will you make sure that it can be solved? Will all columns and rows = 34?

Click on this link to fill in a blank table and post the new document link into the comments section for others to try and complete. This is a view only document so you will need to go into 'file' and then 'make a copy'.

Chinese Paper Cutting

We have been learning to fold and cut paper to create the Chinese character for Spring. We have begun to practice this as it will be the Chinese New Year on Thursday. Today we were perfecting our folding and drawing of the character. Tomorrow we are hoping to move onto the coloured card, which can be displayed in the class.

Here are a couple of videos to explain why paper cutting is a traditional art form. After watching them maybe you would like to have a go as well.
